Police say that a woman was on a walk Monday morning in the Pueblo neighborhood of Peppersauce Bottoms when she was brutally attacked by two pit pulls.
KKTV reports that the woman, approximately in her 50s or 60s, was walking down the road near a house where the dogs live and unfortunately the male dog broke free from its chain, the female dog escaped from her pen and both dogs went after the woman. A delivery man witnessed the attack in progress and scared the dogs away, but not before they had severely injured the woman and dragged her at least 15 yards.
Cpl. Michael Mares, a Pueblo Police spokesperson, told 7News about the nightmarish attack, saying that the victim “was basically de-scalped and dragged across the roadway by the two pit bulls. The witness who stopped to render assistance was able to scare the dogs off.”
KRDO reports that part of the woman’s scalp was lying on the street when the ambulance crews had arrived — the section had become completely detached from her head during the mauling.
The as yet unnamed woman also had serious bite marks on her back and arms, according to the Pueblo Chieftain.
Paul Anthony Rodriguez, the owner of the dogs, has been cited with several violations and said to KKTV that the dogs are usually very friendly and was not sure what happened here, but thought that perhaps the pit bull pair were being protective over the two puppies that also live at the residence. Rodriguez expressed remorse for the attack and plans on euthanizing the pit bulls.
The as yet unnamed woman is expected to survive although she will likely have to undergo several surgeries before she is fully recovered.
