Texas Workplace Death Toll Rises

A recent article in the Texas Tribune reminds us of the grim statistics Texas workers are a part of. In 2014, there were 524 fatal workplace injuries, up from 504 the previous year, making Texas the deadliest workplace state, followed by California with only 334.

Here are some of the highlights from this article:

In 2014, workplace deaths in Texas 524, California 334, Florida 239, New York 178.
Texas has led the nation in total workplace deaths in 11 of the past 14 years.
Adjusting for population, Texas ranked 17th in workplace deaths in 2014.

Potentially, Texas’ higher death toll can be attributed to a few factors that include high number of jobs in transportation, construction and oil and gas production. Also, Texas is the only state that does not require worker’s compensation insurance.
