A couple on the way to Houston to start a new life got no further than New Mexico, where they were killed in a fiery wreck.
Natalie Levine and her boyfriend, Dameon Williams, along with Levine’s teenage son, were making a nearly 2,000-mile trip from Vacaville, California, near Sacramento in the northern part of the state.
They were about half of the way to Houston on eastbound Interstate 40, just east of Gallup when the accident happened. Their car was hit from behind by an 18-wheeler, about 4 a.m. May 5, said Undersheriff James Maiorano with the McKinley County Sheriff’s Office.
“When deputies arrived, they found a small car on its roof and a semi, with the cab portion engulfed in flames,” Maiorano said.
Levine, 38, was driving, and Williams, 26, was in the right-front passenger seat. Levine’s 15-year-old son, Raymond, who is deaf, was sleeping in the back seat.
The two adults were killed but the boy miraculously suffered almost no injuries.
The truck driver, who suffered smoke inhalation, didn’t remember seeing the car, Maiorano said. Due to the impact, the truck veered off the road and struck an embankment.
“Somehow something punctured one of the diesel tanks, and that was the fuel for the fire that caught the cab on fire,” Maiorano said. (full article here)… http://www.chron.com/default/article/Couple-with-high-hopes-for-new-life-in-Houston-5474994.php
